Having a balanced learning routine is an important part of staying motivated and reaching your language goals.
Getting bored with grammar exercises? Make sure you're breaking up your learning routine with not only informational, but also fun and cultural activities. Here are my top 5 ways to maintain motivation and keep your learning spicy 🌶️.
Learn some slang 😎
Slang is not only fun to learn, it is an important part of learning a language. Although slang is not usually taught in the classroom or in textbooks, it is just as much a part of a language as any other vocabulary. And, as you start listening and interacting with native speakers, you will find that slang is everywhere. Plus, slang can be a great conversation starter, and a great way to impress some native speakers.
2. Enjoy some pop culture 📺🍿
If you love movies, music and TV series, why not integrate them into your language learning? Even if you're not quite ready to watch without the subtitles, it's still a great way to get exposure to new vocabulary and culture all at once, all while being entertained.
3. Do it with a friend🧑🏾🤝🧑🏾
Find a friend who is interested in learning too, and start learning together. This is a great way to bond with your friend, plus you can support each other and hold each other accountable for your language goals.
4. Visualize your success 👀
Take some time to visualize your language learning success. Maybe you see yourself impressing your boss with a stellar presentation at work in another language, or mingling with the locals while traveling the world. Whatever your goal may be, if you can see yourself doing it, you're more likely to stay motivated and achieve it.
5. Reward yourself ✨
If you've been putting time and effort into improving your skills, take the time to reward yourself with something you enjoy. It's important to recognize our accomplishments, and rewards can be great motivation to keep pushing forward. If you're learning French, for example, treat yourself to a meal at your favorite French restaurant when you reach your next goal.
If we keep doing the same things, our language learning can get stale pretty quickly. But it doesn't have to be that way. Spice it up, make it fun and keep on learning!
